Whether you’ve been going to the gym for a while or you’re thinking of starting out, confidence plays a MAJOR part in what exactly you get out of it. In fact, it’s proven that if you don’t feel confident in something, your chances of getting your A into G and doing it is small.

I don’t want that for you, especially when it’s something that over time we can fix.

Now I’m no expert when it comes to confidence while working out (“am I doing it right?”), but what I have had experience in is clothing, and too many stories of times where I’ve felt inadequate, and times where I’ve felt like an absolute boss, all because of what I was wearing – Seriously. I put a call out to my Instagram community to see if they feel confident in their gym gear, and although 46% said yes (get it, girl), the other 54% said no.

Let’s change that today…

5 Tips to feel more confident in your gym gear

     1.  WHAT YOU DO DETERMINES WHAT YOU WEAR:
Different forms of exercise require different performance features. The amount of times I’ve worn cardio gear (shorts and a tee) to a barre class and felt like a rugby player is shocking, and I know it’s holding me back from truly giving it my all. My general rule of thumb? Go light and baggy for cardio work (by baggy, I mean either a baggy top or shorts, not both. You want to look balanced), and for weights and classes like yoga and pilates, go a little tighter so you can check your form easily. If you’re really stuck, take note of what your peers are wearing and copy them.

   2.  LOOK THE PART:
If you want more confidence, wear a pair of heels and slap on some lipstick. The theory also goes for going to the gym, kinda – If you want to feel confident, you gotta look the part. Now I’m not saying you need to go out and buy all the expensive brands out there at all (I’m a firm advocate that you can get quality gym gear on a budget), but don’t just opt for that old baggy t-shirt you generally reserve for cleaning the house. Have you EVER felt sexy in that?! Of course not, so how do you think it’ll make you feel wearing it in public?! There’s this idea of Imposter Syndrome that plays in here (you know, the “I don’t fit in” “they can tell I’m not meant to be here” voice in our head?), but if you’re looking the part, you’re bound to start feeling it too.

    3.  INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF LEGGINGS:
I didn’t want to get too far into specifics for this blog post, but I just can’t live another day seeing girl’s wearing see-through leggings (probably) without even realising. When I first started at the gym, I started with what I had. A few weeks in I’d worn both leggings that were see-through, and ones that had a hole in the crotch. Yip, actually! I dreaded doing squats!! The thing is, I wasn’t wearing workout leggings, so of course they weren’t right. The moment I took a stand and invested in some good quality leggings, I felt a TON more confident. If you want leggings that will shape, look at compression leggings (you can easily get a pair for $35-$50) that will last you plenty more gym trips than what you’re currently wearing.

   4.  DON’T LOOK AT THE NUMBER:
Gym gear tends to run a bit small – Especially all the tight stuff – so that doesn’t mean you should always be wearing your size. A lot of my gym gear is one size bigger, and I could even go up one more size here and there. You need to ensure you’re trying everything on, and take two of each item (different sizing) into the changing room with you. Ignore the number, how do you look and feel in it? Go with the one your gut tells you. Friendly reminder: The number on your clothing does not determine your worth, what does is the fact you’re getting up every day and putting your health and happiness first.

  5.  BOOST YOUR BEST ASSETS:
What feature do you feel proud of? THAT’S what you should be accentuating. Doesn’t matter if it’s your legs, arms, waist, or even butt and boobs (I’m not here to judge), accentuate whatever you’re proud of. So say you like your legs but not your belly? Get some cute leggings on, and chuck on a baggier tee. A trick I like to do is to cut a slit up the side of baggier tees so I can tie it at the hips – It’s a good way to hide your belly without hiding your figure. For me, I really like my arms and shoulders (especially when I’m doing weights) so I go for a racer back singlet to show off this asset. By doing this, you’re already walking in thinking “yip, I’m awesome”.

Putting even a few of these tricks in place is bound to start to change your mindset. If you’re beginning to feel confident, celebrate that and how hard you’re working to get there.

Clinique saw a need for self-confidence while working out, so have developed a range of sweat-proof makeup and post-gym skincare essentials called CliniqueFIT. I’ve been trialling the range (through a step class, weights session, Zumba and barre class) and here are my thoughts…

Workout Time:

CliniqueFIT™ Workout Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 40:
What is it? A medium coverage, matte finish foundation that is sweat and humidity resistant, 12-hour oil free wear without clogging pores or causing breakouts.
My thoughts: I had high hopes for this foundation and it didn’t disappoint. When most foundations slide off the moment you break a sweat, this one stayed fairly in place.

CliniqueFIT™ Workout 24-Hour Mascara:
What is it? Volumizing mascara that is sweat and humidity resistant, and wears for 24 smudge-free hours. Available in black.
My thoughts: This mascara was really easy to use and definitely held up when pulling my “I’m in so much pain holding this position” face during Barre class.

CliniqueFIT™ Workout Face + Body Hydrating Spray:
What is it? A refreshing spray that rehydrates and renews skin during or after a workout.
My thoughts: I absolutely LOVE a good face spray for resetting, but I’d never thought about using it while working out. I particularly loved this during my cardio workouts as it cooled me down and reset my energy levels when I really wanted to just take a break.

Post-workout Routine:

CliniqueFIT™ Post-Workout Face + Body Cleansing Swipes:
What is it? On-the-go wipes that clean away excess dirt, oil and sweat to prevent clogged pores and breakouts. Refreshes skin, and preps for makeup.
My thoughts: Simple and easy to use, this took the sweat away easily and gave me a blank canvas to work with. A must for all gym bags!

CliniqueFIT™ Post-Workout Mattifying Moisturizer:

What is it? Mattifying moisturiser that instantly hydrates thirsty skin. Lightweight and oil-free to control oil and shine.
My thoughts: I love a mattifying moisturiser and this one was great for getting rid of the post-workout shine I seem to always get. Used with the foundation on top, it works as a good primer as well.

CliniqueFIT™ Post-Workout Neutralizing Face Powder:
What is it? Colour-correcting powder instantly neutralizes and conceals redness. Blends easily.
My thoughts: This one is probably my favourite product from the CliniqueFIT range. I dabbed it on my cheeks to begin with, then went around the rest of my face and did a second top up on my cheeks. All redness (and signs of a big workout) was gone!

CliniqueFIT™ Lip + Cheek Flush Pink in Motion:
What is it? Sheer gel adds a healthy-looking touch of colour to lips and cheeks. Fade resistant. Oil-free.
My thoughts: I added this one on once I’d cooled down, and it gave me a cute flush.

Overall, I think the range is super great if you’re really into your gym sessions (I go 3-4 times a week so would group myself into this) or if you’re mindful about how you’re looking while working out. Hot tomato face not your look? Didn’t think so. To see the range in action, watch the video below of mega babe and fitness inspo, Kirsty Godso, who’s the face of this range…
